10 Things Every Homeowner Needs to Know About Their Garage Door for 2026

  1. If your garage door gets regular use, a broken spring is inevitable. When this happens, your door will not lift because it is too heavy.
  2. Garage door openers that weren’t installed and adjusted properly are the number one cause of damaged doors.
  3. Most people have either their vehicle registration or a piece of mail with their address in the car, so if your remote control is stolen thieves can easily gain access to your garage. It is best to take your remote with you when your vehicle is parked in a public place. Getting a mini keychain remote makes this easier. Or, if your vehicle is equipped with built in HomeLink buttons, program them and keep the remote inside as a spare.
  4. Many common garage door models are no longer made, so one badly damaged panel could necessitate a whole new door (or multiple doors if there is no matching design available).
  5. Lots of the garage door “companies” that you find online are really lead generation marketing services based over seas. They use fake reviews to pose as a local business, then try to sell leads to…whoever.  I get about a dozen calls every day from shady marketing agencies trying to sell me new customer leads.
  6. If your garage door won’t close, check the safety sensors, there’s a good chance they are misaligned.
  7. Most keypad entry systems are wireless and, like remote controls, require batteries. If your keypad went dead, a new battery may be all it takes to fix it.
  8. LED light bulbs have become the most common source of interference that reduces the range and reliability of garage door remote controls. If you are having trouble with your remotes, try changing the light bulb before you do anything else.  Most LED bulbs work just fine, but a small percentage create RF (radio frequency) interference.
  9. You should lubricate your door with either silicone or white lithium spray lubricant. DO NOT USE WD-40.
  10. Don’t paint all the way to the edges of your garage door where it is covered by the weather seal, or your door could get glued shut (especially if it is a dark color that receives direct sunlight).
